8.0 Magnitude earthquake struck near 33 kilometers West-Southwest of Santa Cruz Island after 12pm yesterday

Up to Six people confirmed dead and others still missing. Lata hospital in Temotu Province confirmed death toll at five last night. But other official reports also in Lata put it at six. The number is expected to rise. From the confirmed deaths, 3 from Nela Village and 2 from Nea Village.
Apart from these deaths and casualties, lata airport was reportedly destroyed and debris blocks the runway.
All houses at Nela Village on Santa Cruz Island were destroyed. Sixteen houses at Luava village were also reported to have destroyed.
Makira – Ulawa Province.
Kirakira, Santa Anna and Namunga reported high swells bu everyone was able to move to higher grounds.
Malaita Province.
Reported unusual waves and current but there were no damages.
More remote areas are yet to be assessed.
Up to date report will be posted as soon as the National Disaster Management Office carry out their assessments hopefully today.
